Events
William Knox D'Arcy of England negotiates a 60-Year oil concession with Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar of Persia for £20,000 (approx. £2m or US $2.7m by today's standards) and 16% of future profits.
After five years with no success and rapidly running out of funds, William Knox D'Arcy agrees to sell the majority of his oil concession to the Burmah Oil Company.
After eight years of no success, having spent more than £500,000 (£50m or US $69.7m today), D'Arcy and Burmah were prepared to abandon efforts, but instead found the largest oilfield known at the time in Persia.
The Burmah Oil Company creates the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) as a subsidiary and sells shares to the public.
Construction of the Abadan Refinery by APOC is completed, becoming the world's largest.
APOC negotiates a 20-year deal with First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill for a steady supply of oil for the Royal Navy.
Winston Churchill gives a speech before Parliament advocating a bill where the British government would purchase a controlling interest in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.
The bill granting the British government authorization to purchase 51% of the Anglo- Persian Oil Company is given royal assent.
