Allied Powers defeat Germany and other Axis powers.
The Cold War begins.
Germany is divided into two countries. The U.S., French, and British zones in the west become the Federal Republic of Germany. The soviet Union owned territory in the east becomes the German Democratic Republic.
2,400 Germans flee from east Berlin.
East Germany begins to build the Berlin Wall.
A second wall is installed, the space between it is called the death strip and it is 110 yards wide.
U.S. President Ronald Reagan makes a speech at the Berlin Wall telling Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the wall.
The Berlin Wall is declared open and citizens of both East and West Berlin start to tear down the wall.
