Risorgimento: Italian movement which wanted the unification of all Italian states. Came to fruition in 1815 after Napoleon was defeated.
Camillo Cavour: Sardinian prime minister who was instrumental in retaking northern Italy from the Austrians in 1858. Named prime minister in 1852.
Crimean War: War that was fought from October 1853 to February 1856 between Russia and Britain, France, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire. Sardinia sent 10,000 troops to aid in the fight against the Russians.
Austro-Sardinian War 29 April – 11 July 1859 War between Austria and the combined forces of Central Italy and Sardinia which ultimately resulted in the Italians finally gaining their independence from the Austrians
Napoleon III: President of the Second Republic (1850-52), then Emperor of the French (1852-70). Sent aid to Italy in the Austro-Sardinian war, which cast aside Austrian control of Italy.
Giuseppe Garibaldi: Italian solider who was leader of the Red Shirts, which was a small army of Italian nationalists, against the Austrians. United the territories he captured in Southern Italy with Sardinia.
Red Shirts: Small band of Nationals from Italy who were instrumental in reinstating Italians control in southern Italy
King Victor Emmanuel II: King of Sardinia 23 March 1849 – 17 March 1861 who later became King of a united Italy in 17 March 1861 – 9 January 1878.
Austro-Prussian War (Seven Weeks War): 14 June – 26 July 1866 War between Austria and Prussia which resulted in the formation of Austria-Hungary and the Italian annexation of Venetia.
Franco-Prussian War: July 19, 1870–May 10, 1871 Started because of a member of Prussia royal family taking the Spanish throne. Saw the end of the Second French Empire, formation of the Third French Republic, and the formation of the German Empire.
Zollverein (Customs Union): January 1, 1834: German trade confederation between a majority of the states in Germany. Was a critical step to the reunification of Germany
Danish War: 24 March 1848 – 8 May 1852: War between the German Confederation who was aided by Prussia, and Denmark to determine control of the Schleswig and Holstein duchies. Denmark maintained control of the duchies after the end of the war.
