Dr. John Oliven coins the term "transgender" in his book "Sexual Hygiene and Pathology."
Harvey Milk becomes first openly gay man elected to a political office in California
The iconic Brian Anderson comes out as first openly-gay skateboarder.
In 1996, President Clinton signs Defense of Marriage Act into law, barring federal benefits to same-sex couples and allowing states to deny same-sex marriages. In 2013, Supreme Court removed federal portion of DOMA, and in 2015 it ruled that state bans are unconstitutional.
