1888 - Dorset County Council Formed under the Local Government Act. This governed the administrative county of Dorset which was based on historic county borders.
1974 – Dorset becomes a two-tier non-metropolitan county after a reorganisation of local government. The county border was extended eastwards to incorporate the former Hampshire towns of Bournemouth and Christchurch.
1997 - Bournemouth and Poole both become administratively independent single tier authorities
Feb 2017 - Proposal of Future Dorset campaign. Campaign to reform Dorset's local government into two unitary authorities: The Dorset Area will involve the rural and coastal areas of Dorset. Conurbation Dorset will involve the urban areas of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.
Nov 2017 - Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, provides his backing for the Future Dorset campaign
