Friedrich Miescher (1869) Discovery of DNA inside the nucleus of a cell
Linus Pauling (1922) Discovered the spiral structure of proteins in DNA. Additionally DNA is connected using hydrogen bonds.
Frederick Griffith (1928) Discovered that Bacteria could transfer genetic information to other bacteria cells.
Edward Tatum (1941) American geneticist who discovered that genes controlled steps in metabolism. Worked with George Beadle.
George Beadle (1941) Worked with Edward Tatum to discovered that genes can control metabolism and biochemical events. They also discovered that one gene codes for one protein.
Oswald Avery (1943) Discovered that DNA could carry genetic information.
Erwin Chargaff (1949) Discovered that the proportions of bases in DNA depend on the species that is comes from. He also discovered that the number of Adenine bases matched the number of Thymine bases and that the number of Cytosine and Guanine bases also match.
Hershey & Chase (1952) Confirmed that DNA holds the genetic material of cells by using radioactive material and viruses.
Watson & Crick (1953) Used research of previous scientists to discover and make a model of DNA as a double helix.
Sydney Brenner (1953) South American Biologist who was one of the first to view Watsonand Crick's model. Discovered that DNA is non-overlapping and the existance of mRNA.`
Arthur Kornberg (1953) Worked on discovering how DNA is synthesized. Artificially created DNA in a test tube. Isolated enzymes used in DNA synthesis such as DNA Polymerase I.
Zamecnik & Hoagland (1956) Discovered the existance of tRNA.
Meselson & Stahl (1958) Discovered hat DNA replication was semiconservative
Rosalind Franklin (1952) Performed X-ray crystallography on DNA and helped prove it's helix shape.
