1897 - J.J. Thomson ------- An English physicist, J.J. Thomson, made the discovery of the electron and made a model for the structure of the atom. .
1900 - Max Planck ------- A professor of theoretical physics in Berlin, Max Planck, showed that when you vibrate atoms strong enough, such as when you heat an object until it glows, you can measure the energy only in discrete units. He called these energy packets, quanta. Hence the name, quantum physics. .
1905 - Albert Einstein ------- In 1905, Einstein wrote a, what was said to be "ground breaking", paper that explained that light absorption can release electrons from atoms, a phenomenon called the "photoelectric effect." Einstein received his only Nobel Prize for physics in 1921 for his work on the photoelectric effect .
1911 - Ernest Rutherford ------- He thought it would be interesting to blow up atoms with alpha rays rays, as he knew that this experiment could help examine the inside of the atom.
1924 - Wolfgang Pauli ------- In 1924, Austrian physicist, Wolfgang Pauli, theorised that an electron should spin while it orbits around the nucleus. .
1932 - James Chadwick ------- In 1932, the English physicist, James Chadwick discovered the neutron. He figured that it was slightly heavier than a proton and had no charge (neutral). The proton-neutron together, was given the name, "nucleon." .
