Jan 1864 Congress debated several proposals. Some insisted on including provisions to prevent discrimination against blacks
April 1864 The Senate passed the amendment. A republican victory when amendment passed.
Jan 1865 House passed the amendment. It was now sent to the states for ratification.
Dec 26 1865 When Georgia ratified it the institution of slavery officially ceased to exist in the United States.
