This date marks when Secretary of State John Hay declared the Open Door Policy to be official in his Open Door Note. This was an important document because it allowed for free trading in China, as opposed to before where only those countries with trading rights in certain parts of China could trade with China. Not many of the countries with trading rights agreed with the Policy, but we declared it official anyway. This was a largely important step to gaining influence in Eastern Asia.
On this date, Queen Liliuokalani is overthrown by a group of sugar plantation owners and wealthy businessmen aided by American troops. Liliuokalani was the former queen of Hawaii, and America aided her overthrowing

This date marks the start of the Boxer Rebellion in China. The Boxer rebellion was started by an organization called the "Righteous and Harmonious Fists" in China. It strove to keep Western influence out of China, and take down the dynasty in China. It took 7 weeks and a makeshift army of different nations to suppress this rebellion. Millions of dollars were doled out to those countries involved in suppressing this rebellion, including the United States, who had never actually sent troops to suppress them.
