Andrei Chikatilo was working as a teacher where he committed his first known sexual assault. Therefore, parents of the children started to file complaints, so the school director told Chikatilo to resign or be fired.
Chikatilo began his killings and was looking for young victims around the railroad stations and bus depots in the sorrounding area and cities in Rostov-na-Donu.
He committed his first murder of a 9-year-old Yelena Zakotnova her blood and backpack was found near his home. However, a laborer who lived near by was pushed into confection and convicted.
Twenty one year old Larisa Tkachenko disappeared in the city of Rostov her body was discovered the next day. Nine months later he killed thirteen-year-old Lyubov Biryuk whose body was found 2 weeks later. He killed 5 more people between the age 9 and 18.
Since all the victim's had similar wounds from mutilations police became aware they were dealing with a serial killer.
Chikatilo came to be in the raider of the Russian police when he tried to talk to a young woman at a bus station while trying to rub against them. A background check was done which shown his past history of his teaching career. A blood type analysis failed to link him to the evidence.

Chikatilo murdered Svetlana Korostik While trying to wash his hands an officer noticed he had dirt in his clothes and a wound in his face. The officer had to let him go because he had no reason to arrest him but did file a report. He was put under surveillance and was caught trying to lure in victims. On November 20, they arrested him.
Andrei Chikatilo was charged with 53 counts of murder and was found guilty of 52 of them.
