Like in the early 1900’s was incredibly varied depending on one’s country and city or country life as well as socio-economic level. But generally in the U.S here are some trend lines for the first few of decades of the twentieth century. Most of the population in rural areas had no electricity or telephones, and very few paved roads. No electricity meant no refrigeration and limited light after dark. No telephones and no paved roads meant very limited mobility. Train travel was somewhat common. Mass production of automobiles began to change that in the late 1920’s but was that trend was interrupted by the stock market crash and ensuing debacle of the great depression. Electrification of rural areas was significantly advanced by the policies of the Roosevelt Administration. Refrigeration became much more common after World War Two.
