Abraham Lincoln an opponent of slavery, a self taught lawyer and legislator became the sixteenth President of the United States in 1861. His Presidency consisted of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery along with a numerous amount of other things as well. At the start of the Civil War, Lincoln proved to be an excellent military leader and strategist. He then focused on the abolition of slavery because he believed then that it was the only way to end the Civil War and unite the Union again. He implemented the Emancipation Proclamation which banned slavery in any Confederate state. He was then assassinated by John Wilkes Booth and was never able to see the end of slavery in the United States, but is known as one of the greatest presidents in the history of the United States.
