Black Power Movement (1 janv. 1960 – 1 janv. 1970)
Description:
Despite the large amount of civil rights legislation being passed during this period to aid black people, many were still frustrated by the fact that, while they were legally equal to whites, they were still not equal economically, politically, or societally. As a result, they formed the Black Power movement, which argued that blacks should stop looking to the inherently racist institutions of white society, and act for themselves, by themselves, to achieve their goals. The movement called for blacks to define and defend themselves against white aggression. As a part of this movement, the Black Panthers were formed, who called for blacks to arm themselves and demand full employment, decent housing, and control over their own communities. (Continuity: blacks fighting racial injustice with any means at their disposal)
