In the Bay of Pigs incident, JFK approved the U.S. invasion of Cuba against Castro, but it was a failure that caused the capture of over a thousand Americans. The Cuban Missile Crisis marked the moment of highest tension of the Cold War—the U.S. barely avoided war when JFK and Khrushchev made a compromise under the threat of nuclear war.
