Berlin Airlift (26 juin 1948 – 12 mai 1949)
Description:
There was no clause in Yalta or Potsdam guaranteeing supplies to West Berlin and so the only way to keep it going was to fly in supplies
Code-named operation Vittles by the Americans and Operation Plainfare by the British, the airlift started around 80 planes making two daily trips but it soon escalated to one arriving every 3 minutes - delivering around 4000 tonnes of supplies per day. By April 1949 more supplies were dropped in by air than previously had by rail. It was clearly successful and sustainable so eventually the USSR dropped the blockade.
