Art historical period: Baroque (1 janv. 1590 – 19 juill. 1725)

Description:

The Baroque is a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, theatre, and music. Its succes was encouraged by the Catholic Church and aristocracy. The last-mentioned used its dramatic style as a means of impressing guests by showcasing their own power and control in this way.

The paintings I put in here are:
1. Rembrandt van Rijn, 'The Night Watch' (1642, Rijksmuseum).
2. Peter Paul Rubens, 'Judgement of Paris' (1636, National Gallery, London). This painting is one of the many paintings rubens did of the Judgement of Paris, it shows Rubens' version of idealised feminine beauty, with the goddesses Venus, Minerva and Juno on the left and Paris and Mercury on the right.
3. Johannes Vermeer, 'The Allegory of Painting' (1666-1667, Vienna).
