Songhay Empire (1 janv. 1464 – 1 janv. 1591)

Description:

The Songhay Empire succeeded Mali and Ghana. Ruler, Sunni Ali, built a decentralized government, where areas are ruled by governors, and a powerful navy that allowed the empire to expand north, west, and east. The empire was also an active participant in the trans-Saharan trade of salt, textiles, metal, gold, and slaves. The empire was Muslim and supported mosques, schools, and universities. Islam in the Songhay empire combined with traditional African practices as it did in many other areas of Africa. The Songhay Empire fell to a Moroccan army and split into small kingdoms and city-states that continued to prosper. (4.1)(4.3)
