With Pope Urban in Rome and Clement VII in Avignon. France and spain sided with Clement but England, Portugal and eastern Europe sided with Urban. John of Spoleto a professor at Bologna summed up the Schism: The longer this lasts the more it will cost, how many casualties and the more harm it does.
