Description:

Born to Maria Theresa in Vienna, Austria during a time of great instability for European monarchies. At the age of 15 she was married to Louis XVI, the Dauphin at the time, to create an alliance between French and Hapsburg thrones. She would come to symbolize the superfluousness of the French monarchy, which made her a target for gossip. Because she was so young when she became queen, the inexperienced Marie indulged in crazy hair-dos and jewels.
Shortly after her husband's execution in 1793, she was arrested and tried for questionable charges against the French Republic and faced the guillotine.
