The Numbered Treaties (1 janv. 1871 – 17 févr. 1921)
Description:
The 11 Numbered Treaties are signedby the Canadian government and Indigenous nations. These treaties, still controversial and contested today, make vast areas of traditional Indigenous territory available for white settlement and development in exchange for a system of reserves (treaty lands), cash payments, access to agricultural tools, and hunting and shing rights. Elders note that the initial spirit and intent of the treaties have been disregarded.
