Description:
A struggle to gain power over the Italian states that Involved most of Western Europe. It was a result of instability in the Italian states and the eagerness of large European power to intervene. In 1494, Charles VIII of France captured Naples. Charles had initial success but he was met by the defense of Maximillian I, the Holy Roman Emperor, with the help of Austria/Spain. There were numerous battles fighting for the control of the Italian states.
The war finally ended with the Peace of Cateau-Cambresis. The French lost control of the Italian states, leaving the Spanish Hapsburgs in power for the next century.
