Reign of Henry IV of France (2 août 1589 – 14 mai 1610)

Description:

As a protestant leader from Navarre who was the last legitimate descendant of the Capetian dynasty, Henry IV was a threat to French rule. During the 1570s, France was engaged in a civil war that pitted the Huguenots against the Catholics, and Navarre was part of this conflict. It started after a massacre at Henry's wedding to Margaret of Valois in 1572. In order to achieve a lasting peace after Huguenots were given some concessions, Henry IV had to publicly claim to be Catholic. Eventually he became ruler of France itself, and his toleration of Huguenots would later contrast with his grandson Louis XIV's want for control through religious domination.
