Description:
Catherine became empress of Russia after she devised a conspiracy to murder her husband. Under her reign, Russia grew increasingly powerful, and it became recognized as one of the great powers of Europe. Catherine employed westernization and Enlightenment ideals into her reign. She sponsored many Enlightenment philosophers, including Diderot. Catherine was considered an Enlightened despot, as she attempted to employ Enlightenment ideals such as religious tolerance and limiting the practice of torture. However, after an attempted serf uprising, Catherine increased serf bondage to their nobles.
