Reign of Pope Innocent III (8 janv. 1198 – 14 août 1216)

Description:

a pope who enjoyed many political and temporal powers, declared the Albigensian Crusade, and exercised control over kings’ affairs such as excommunicating King John of England.

Pope Innocent III prohibited Philip II Augustus from divorcing his wife or from invading England. In addition, this pope excommunicated King John after he resisted the papacy’s choice for the position of Archbishop of Canterbury and placed England under interdict, a suspension of taking part in the sacraments. In order to stop this controversy with Pope Innocent III, King John presented the kingdom of England as a papal fief.
