The Enlightenment (14 juin 1650 – 14 juin 1800)

Description:

The Enlightenment also called the age of reason. The highlight of this epoch is the stage where every individual starts to become independent, by being able to think by oneself. More and more people in this era started distance themself from the church, and started criticizing it aswell. New philosophical thoughts began to establish themselves among the individuals. The most important were rationalism, empirism, deism and egalitarism.

During the enlightenment, society began to be regarded as a product of human reason and not as a result of God's will. Man could change society himself. There were alot of philosophers who came across several ideas that questioned the rulers of that time. For example One of the most influential enlightenment philosophers was Rousseau, who believed that the will of the people would be the basis for all social power. Locke and Voltaire raised many ideas concerning the democracy such as voting rights, freedom of expression, legal certainty and freedom of religion.

On the whole, many of the ideas of enlightenment were a reaction to the royal monarchy which assumed that the governor was appointed by God to rule over the people.
