Description:

uh . . . a rush for gold in Calfornia; motivated a lot of people to move to California to try to get some . . . gold. This was also sort of part of manifest destiny. Well, it influenced the power and gold-hungry to follow it and go West. When people go west, railroads, telegraph wires, etc. are never far behind.
