Land reforms of Tiberius Gracchus and Gaius (2 janv. 133 av. J.-C. – 27 avr. 121 av. J.-C.)

Description:

Gracchus, who believed the underlying cause of Rome's problems was the decline of small farmers. He and Gaius, over a 12 year period, pushed a series of reforms to redistribute the large swathes of public land held by large landowners and redistribute it to landless Romans. Both of these men would be killed by the furious Senate. This stifling of necessary reform led to further violence and instability and marked the beginning of the breakdown of the Republican style of government.
