Hungarian revolution leads Imre Nagy to declare Hungary’s neutrality and withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact; suppressed by Soviet invasion (with several thousand fatalities). First real challenge to SU's power. Polarized opinion in the Eastern Bloc.
