Great Leap Forward (3 nov 1958 – 9 juin 1962)
Description:
In a time of major industrial and agricultural problems, the Chinese hoped that something would change. Machinery would overtake human processes which lead to major job losses and public anger. The campaign, “Great Leap Forward,” was undertaken by the Chinese communist, in hopes to come up with labor intensive processes in the industry that would emphasize manpower over machinery. This new experimental commune system would soon spread throughout the country quickly. It was supposed to include all sorts of labor, but the system would oftentimes have many errors in implementation and worsened over natural disaster that ultimately lead to a failed agricultural system. Approximately 20 million people were estimated to have died of starvation during the period of time. The Great Leap Forward program proved to be unsuccessful.
