Description:

Three different parts:
• 1. Early Tudor Period (1485-1558)
• 2. Elizabeththan Period (1558-1603)
• 3. Jacobean Period (1603-1625)

The Renaissance, French meaning Rebirth.
• Started in Italy then spread through Europe (da Vinci, Michelangelo…)
• Revival of Classical learning and wisdom after a long period of cultural decline and stagnation during the Middle Ages.
• Humanism
• Inventions (paper, printing)
• Discovery of new continents
• Growth of commerce and trade
• Different cultures

Culture took a bigger part of the society, it started be be a part f the everyday life

1. King Henry VIII - One of the most famous kings in English history. 1485; Initiated religious restructuring (reformation). He was a religious rebellion, “playboy”. He cut all ties to the Church of Rome. He created/established the church of England, made himself the supreme head of the church.

2. Queen Elizabeth First
• Elizabeth (Henry VIII:s daugther) took over the throne 1558 and ruled for nearly half a century.
• Country unified stability
• Being woman – controversial during this time
• Ruling for 44 years in England
• England becomes a super power
• National symbol of England
• Never married, called "The Virgin Queen"
• Role model, fashion icon
• Brilliant survivor, odds against her

3. King James l
• James took over the throne in 1603
• Court standards were lowered
• Development of English prose
• Decline of the drama after the death of Shakespeare
