What: A communal transcendentalist experiment conducted at Brook Farm in Massachusetts in an effort to achieve “a more natural union between intellectual and manual labor”. The experiment sought to balance the education of children with physical labor and instill personal responsibility. Brook Farm attracted farmers and craftsmen as well, who received a dollar a day for both mental and physical work and were provided food, clothing, and housing. The experiment ended due to debt and fire, but remained known for fostering of New England’s intellectual elite.
