14th Amendment (1 oct. 1868 – 23 sept. 1909)

Description:

After the Civil Rights Act of 1866 declared that Southern states could not enact racist black codes that severely limited the social and economic rights of African Americans in the South, congress also passed the Fourteenth Amendment. It applied to all state governments. Johnson opposed the Fourteenth Amendment because he felt that it was too harsh on the South. It passed anyway.
