De-Christianization (3 nov 1793 – 1 déc. 1794)
Description:
The Convention attempts to De-Christianize France in order to promote a republic of virtue. Prominent religious figures had been members of the first estate and were often considered counterrevolutionary.
They establish a new calendar and rename the months. The weeks were now 10 days long, and the 10th day, rather than the traditional 7th day was the holiday. This secularizes time.
In November of 1793, the Convention renames the Cathedral of Notre Dame to be the "Temple of Reason".
The convention closes down churches and persecutes clergy and believers.
Robespierre eventually replaces the church of "reason" with the "Cult of the Supreme Being". This was a deist approach to imposing civic virtue into the masses by religious indoctrination. This idea was first proposed by Rouseeau.
The image below shows nuns and monks being forced to marry in order to enforce secularist culture.
