World Encephalitis Outbreak (3 juin 1917 – 3 juin 1928)

Description:

1917-1928: In 1908, Dr. Alfred Frank Tredgold publishes "Mental Deficiency (amentia)", which showed a correlation between early childhood brain damage and learning and behavioral problems later throughout a child's life. His studies were based on an encephalitis epidemic that affected roughly 20 million people around the world. Many children affected by the encephalitis demonstrated behavior, referred to as “postencephalitic behavior disorder”. Among the many behaviors associated with the disorder include hyperactivity, distractibility, unruly and hard to manage in the school setting. Once again, studies on these children added to the growing body of research that would eventually lead to the development of ADHD.
