Set up after Li Yuan beat other contenders to the throne and overthrew the Sui Dynasty in 618.
In the first years of the Tang, Emperor Taizong (r. 626– 49)

The pursuit of arts and poetry.
Imperial examination became a major path into government positions.
Truly flourished with smart individuals without any important family ties being able to achieve government positions.

Another rebellion but this time by the peasants (Huang Chao)
Jiedushi took all the power from the scholar-officials forced the emperor to resign (907)
