Description:

“Hansa” organization founded by north German towns and trading guilds (protect mutual trading).

League controlled trade in Northern Europe from the 13th to the 15th century.

During the 13th century, most of Northen Europe was organized into independent city-states

Functioned on their own relied on trade for survival.

One of these city-states, Lubeck which
Granted the title of the free imperial city (govern itself).

Formed alliances with other German trade cities as the 13th century progressed
Ally cities had to agree to “Law of Lubeck”

End of the 13th-century network of alliances had reached Novgorod in 1356 (Officially organized)
Trade provided advantages to those who were included

Set tariffs and taxes to all those who wanted to trade with a city in the league.

If a city did not agree to their terms then no city in the league would trade with said city.

League established a monopoly in areas where there were many cities that were part of the Hanseatic League.

League started to decline in the 15th century

Margaret ordered the league to relinquish tolls and tariffs in her territory,

League lost a significant part of monopoly in Northern Europe.

Russia also caused the decline of the league
Moscow invaded Novgorod and expelled all Hanseatic merchants living in that city

This external pressure made relations with the other members of the league very strained

Growing power of empires in trade during the age of discovery fastened the leagues end with the majority of the members having withdrawn by the end of the 16th century.
