The Tang Dynasty was set up after Li Yuan beat other contenders to the throne and overthrew the Sui Dynasty in 618. In the first years of the Tang, particularly under the authority of Emperor Taizong (r. 626– 49), China quelled its nomadic rivals from the East, ensuring safety and peace on trade routes reaching. This lack of outside pressure also allowed for the reconstruction of the broken political system and the pursuit of arts and poetry. During this time the imperial examination became a major path into government positions. Although it existed in Han times, it was during the Tang that it truly flourished with smart individuals without any important family ties being able to achieve government positions. Poetry also flourished during the Tang dynasty, with major works and important Chinese poets belonging to that time period. Poets like Li Bai who is considered one of the most important Chinese poets of all time. The Tang dynasty is also known for intellectual advancement with technologies such as gunpowder being invented during that time. Woodblock printing was also invented during the Tang period which allowed for the fast manufacturing of literary works which helped with the spread of Buddhism. As peace went on, emperors started becoming lazy and corruption started to establish itself in the dynasty. Meanwhile, An Lushan declared himself emperor of Northern China causing a rebellion that was very costly to win and resulted in less power being in the hands of the scholar-officials and more power in the hands of jiedushi (military governors). After another rebellion but this time by the peasants (Huang Chao), These Jiedushi eventually took all the power from the scholar-officials and forced the emperor to resign ending the Tang Dynasty in 907
