- Art is almost entirely focused on religion - The official language was Latin until 700CE - It was changed to Greek by emperor Heraclius - Constantinople was attacked by the crusaders in the Fourth Crusade. - Gave rise to the Eastern Orthodox church - Preserved many of the writings of Ancient Greece - Justinian was determined to revive ancient Rome by recovering the provinces taken - Eastern Roman empire = Byzantine empire - The Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church treated each other as rivals instead of realizing that they come from the same branch - Declined because of the attacks from the Ottoman Turks
