The Enlightenment was an intellectual and philosophical movement that dominated the world of ideas in Europe during the 18th century, the "Century of Philosophy." French historians traditionally place the Enlightenment between 1715 and 1789.
1) Reason - rational world
2) Attracted the educated and middle-class population. Increase in literacy, printing press, books.
3) Period of ideas, values, writers, artists, newspapers, and progress towards happiness (aka money). Hence, darkness to light.
MAJOR POWER SHIFT: EAST TO WEST
World powers shifted from the east (China, India, Islamic World) to the west (Europe). The west has dominated since then.
