o	Considered an emerging, vector borne-disease 
o	Zoonotic disease
o	Aedes Mosquito
o	Mostly found in Africa and South America 
o	Impact of timing of infection during pregnancy is important 
•	Transmission/Symptoms:
o	Symptoms can lead to Microcephaly that is a underdeveloped brain
♣	Can happen through genetic link and outside forces that influence the developing fetus
♣	Can be sexually transmitted
o	Aedes mosquito where 73% of the cases are asymptomatic 
o	loss of appetite, fatigue, chills, vomiting, fever
o	Can also lead to Guillain-Barre Syndrome 
•	Treatments:
o	Mosquito repellent and mosquito nets are part of prevention 
o	No cure or vaccine
o	Can use Tylenol and stay hydrated 
•	Historical events: 
o	1947: Discovered in Monkeys 
o	1952: Discovered in Humans
o	2016: cases found in Columbia, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, USA, Paraguay, Panama, Puerto Rico
