resulted from a growth in science (i.e. Isaac Newton & John Locke)wore away Calvinism (meaning away from the the belief that misery & want were inevitable)
belief became that poor people had the same characteristics as privileged people so it gave way to social reform and humanitarianism.
gave rise to belief that the poor were personally responsible for their conidition
