Location: Petersburg, VA

Historical Significance:Founded by Tsar Peter the Great on 27 May 1703. It became capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1712–1728, 1732–1918). St. Petersburg ceased being the capital in 1918 after the Russian Revolution of 1917.
NUmber of Deaths:Union casualties at the First Battle of Deep Bottom were 488 (62 killed, 340 wounded, and 86 missing or captured).Confederate casualties were 679 (80 killed, 391 wounded, 208 missing or captured).

In 1860, Petersburg was the second largest city in Virginia and the seventh largest in the Confederacy.
-Petersburg’s transportation nexus made it an attractive target for General Ulysses S. Grant in June 1864.
- The Petersburg Campaign encompassed 292 days of combat, maneuver, and trench warfare between June 15, 1864, and April 2, 1865.
-The largest regimental loss of the Civil War was sustained by the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery at Petersburg.
