Description:

1630: SWEDISH phase begins; ferdinand ii loses trust in wallenstein and dismisses him

King gustavus adolfus of sweden: lutheran, commander, & badass; father of modern warfare (first to use mobile artillery [canons]); descends into HRE to help protestants and emerges victorious from battle of brettenfield b/c fancy artillery

France (led by Louis XIII) was funding Sweden during this phase (Swedish Swords, French Funds), so technically against HRE, despite being mostly catholic country; joined sweden bc their public policy is always one of ‘balance of power’, and since they were surrounded by habsburgs, wanted to kick habsburgs down a notch

Politique; politics over religion; championed by those like henry IV of navarre and cardinal richelieu

1632: swedish king Gustavus Adolfus dies in battle. End of swedish phase- switches w/ france (sweden handles money, france takes over fighting)
