8th-13th c - Caroline script (14 oct. 700 – 8 mars 1200)

Description:

- Clearer, easier to read
- Main script from late 8th-13th c.
- Developed intentionally to reform and systematize the Latin alphabet at the behest of Charlemagne
- Essentially identical to our lowercase script today, except for long ‘s’
- Supplanted all local scripts in the Carolingian Empire
- By late 10th c. overtakes insular script for Latin texts in England
- Most similar to half-uncial
- Over time, the letters become taller, rounded bits become angular: this development leads to gothic…
- Random use of short vs. long ‘s’
