Religious Policy of Portuguese (18 avr. 1497 – 19 oct. 1579)
Description:
1) Arriving in the east Portuguese brought with them a zeal to promote Christianity and persecute Muslims.
2) Initially Portuguese were tolerant towards Hindus but after the inquisition of Goa, Hindus were also persecuted.
3) But in spite of their intolerant behavior, they were able to make a good impression at Akbar’s court, mainly due to emperors interest in questions of theology.
