More influential dynasty compared to the short lived Sui Dynasty

S:
- did kowtow (bowing until his/her head reaches the floor) when seeing the emperor

P:
-had a bureaucracy (continuity of China's gov.)
- used the CIVIL SERVICE EXAM- exam based on merit, if passed then one will be qualified to become a gov. official
- used a MERITOCRACY- government run based off of skill, knowledge, and not status
-TRIBUTARY SYSTEM: neighboring countries payed tribute through money, goods, to honor the Chi nese emperor.

- the GRAND CANAL- a waterway that connected south to north China
-used it for transporting goods, rice, other crops from the Yangtze river valley
-built the Long Wall which later became apart of the Great Wall of China

-a Chinese Buddhist monk named Xuanzang left to India on a pilgrimage. When he returned he brought back writings and translated them into Chinese --> major contribution to the spread of Buddhism

the fall:
- 8th c had a distracted emperor. An army of Uighurs (ethic group in Central Asia) came from the west and started a rebellion. In the end the Tang lost and had to pay annual tribute to the Uighur.
