Chartism (1 janv. 1836 – 1 janv. 1848)

Description:

Godden states (p7) that in Sept 1836, ‘Minton’s, as well as other Staffordshire manufacturers were affected by labour troubles’. Chartist Strikes/Riots (See Chartism in the Potteries document and Owen, 1901).
The strikes are mentioned in letters (Dec 26th 1836) from John Boyle to his father’s customers in America. See Godden p.154. “…We regret that there is not as yet any prospect of a settlement with the men…”. And on p.6 “…The crisis seems to have come which will settle the point whether the employers of the employed are to be masters.”
In a letter to Messrs Ducroz & Millidge of London, Jan 28th 1837, Boyle records, “On Monday morning (January 30th) we shall commence work”.
