Appeal of protestantism to german govt:
Germany wasn’t yet a country, but when luther referred to common culture as ‘germans’ against rcc, unifying nationalism attracted german govt to lutheranism (increase power)
Also, bc lutheranism was a lil communist-y, govt could legally confiscate lush farmlands, rich monasteries, and wealthy shrines; v attractive (increase $)

Swiss war:
Charles v, in his vicious defense of catholicism, started beef with switzerland (collection of 13 largely autonomous states, technically part of his roman empire) for being protestant → super bloody, zwingli died in battle, people bugged pretty quickly → resolved peace treaty; each canton (state) could choose its own religion but had to give up all foreign alliances
