Restrictions on the movement of Indigenous Peoples (23 oct. 1885 – 21 août 1941)

Description:

"Segregated residentially, Black populations also faced restrictions beyond the home. Subject to practices of containment, Black presence itself was heavily surveilled and restricted… Similar informal but widely enforced segregation policies restricted Indigenous peoples' movements from 1885 to the mid-twentieth century under the 'pass system.' Indigenous people living on reserves could not leave unless they obtained written permission from Indian agents. The pass system was brought in as an emergency measure after the Northwest Resistance of 1885 and was enforced until 1941, though the practice was never officially brought before Parliament (Williams 2015)."
