The Great Schism. (1 janv. 1378 – 8 avr. 1417)

Description:

The Great Schism, or the Western Schism, began shortly after the end of the Avignon Papacy, when Pope Urban VI was elected. Shortly after this however, his attitude caused many cardinals to regret their decision. As a result, the decided to move back to Avignon and there they elected a new pope. This caused a period of turmoil within the church, having two or three popes at the same time. This drew the European countries into factions based on which pope they supported. Fortunately, the crisis concluded with Council of Constance, resulting in the restoration of the single Roman pope, and it introduced the practice of conciliariaism, which states that a council of the Church would be held higher than the pope.
